Back in the BVI (British Virgin Islands)

Cheers to Twenty Years!

Twenty years ago, Dan worked as First Mate on a yacht docked in the BVI (British Virgin Islands). I had the opportunity to visit him and we had an amazing time exploring the islands. Wedding bells, two wonderful daughters, and full time careers made 20 years speed by. We always longed for a return visit to the place our romance evolved … the BVI.

With our boat tied to a mooring ball, we wake to the sound of seagulls flying by and the aroma of salt air. We head up to the flybridge with fresh coffee, for a view of the aquamarine sea and a touch of the island breeze. Our pulse is in full relaxation mode. After breakfast, a refreshing swim, a little paddle boarding, and some snorkeling makes for the perfect morning.

Cruising on a MarineMax 44 Aquila Power Catamaran

Reliving an exciting time 20 years ago, we found the perfect boat for exploring the Islands. The MarineMax 44 Aquila Power Catamaran with a full beam master stateroom, an oversized fly bridge featuring an electrical grill and fridge, and a stern window that lifts and converts into a bar with stools, providing luxurious space throughout the boat.

Bitter End

Pulling in to the Bitter End Yacht Club Marina, we could hear island tunes coming from various boats, and instantly we realized this was paradise for the water enthusiast. Sadly, in September 2017, this area was hit by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Exciting plans are underway for the comeback of Bitter End Yacht Club, and it promises to be better than ever.

When traveling by boat, it is always nice to stretch your legs, get some hiking in, and enjoy a bird’s eye view of the sea. We followed Guy’s Trail (currently closed due to rebuilding) above Bitter End Yacht Club and captured a beautiful sunset overlooking Saba Rock.

Marina Cay

We were last at Pusser’s Marina Cay, 20 years ago, when Dan picked me up from the airport in a 25 ft. Mako and we cruised here for a sunset happy hour. CHEERS to 20 years with Pusser’s signature drink, the Painkiller Cocktail!

Fun at Cane Garden Bay

We anchored in Cane Garden Bay, where the beach is lined with lively bars and restaurants and you hear the echo of steel drums. Sometimes, the best places are the ones you stumble upon. We decided to walk off the beaten path, a mere block away, and discovered Columbus Sunset Bar & Variety Store. They sell ice cold drinks, alcohol, and department store products. We sat down at the bar and had a fabulous time chatting with the locals. Afterwards, we found some calm time chilling out in the bay’s turquoise water.

The Baths on Virgin Gorda

The Baths in Virgin Gorda, with white sand beaches, and ginormous granite boulders of various sizes, are one of the most stunning sights you will ever set your eyes on. These boulders are the result of volcanic eruptions, forming pools of sea water that flow through the grottoes.

Meet Ivan!

We had the pleasure of exploring Virgin Gorda’s back roads and mountain views thanks to Ivan, our taxi driver. We asked for a lunch recommendation and he took us to Hog Heaven where we enjoyed the best barbecue EVER along with a spectacular view!

After lunch, our adventure continued with Ivan as he drove us through the mountains and stopped for us to take panoramic photos. One of our favorite memories was seeing all the beautiful murals along the road painted by the Virgin Islanders. Ivan shared stories of the islands which contributed to one of the best days of our whole trip. Thanks Ivan!

BVI STRONG!

Category 5 Hurricanes Irma and Maria struck the BVI in September 2017, just 6 months after our visit. Our pictures show the island before the devastation and extensive damage.

Not only are these islands beautiful, they are made up of warm, kind-hearted islanders who have lost so much and are left with strength, hope and determination. The BVI Tourism Industry has made significant strides with recovery and rebuild.

There are 2 ways we can support the BVI in their long term recovery.

Support the Seeds of Love Initiative. Contribute to the replanting of indigenous trees and vegetation to protect the ecosystem.

Make plans to spend your next vacation in the BVI. You will fall in love with the sailing, beaches, sunsets, music, restaurants, and the people. The Virgin Islanders remain BVI STRONG.
